My Year in Haiti
It's All About the Children

Meet the Kids

Every so often I will try to add another photo and bio of the kids here. I hope that you will come to love them as I have! Stay tuned for updates!

ah cha cha!
This is Appoloste - aka Applesauce. He is the Jimmy Durante of our mission/school. Not a day goes by this prankster doesn't bring joy and delight to my time here. In fact, he gets into quite a bit of mischief in the classroom because he's always looking at things from the comedian's perspective. His infectious giggles can't help but turn a frown upside down. He's really smart, but definitely not an alpha-male, so sometimes I think his self confidence is held back a little against our "shining stars." The photo was taken on a day that he was needing a little mommy time. He kept interrupting me in the office so I finally shut down my computer and played with him a bit. Eventually one of the girls came in asking for hair things and he wanted some too. It wasn't easy finding clamps that would hold in his little bitty hair, but this is what we came up with. He was very delighted!

Jonathan U or JU as we call him - He's one of our brightest! And so lovable!
Jonathan Yves-Ulis is our newest resident. He came to us on Oct 30th and had not one English word in his repertoire. After only 2 months, you'd never know he hadn't been here as long as the rest of the little ones. He is energetic, enthusiastic, and very affectionate. He tells me he loves me every time he walks past me. When we do devotions at night he sings the loudest, even though he has just learned the songs by watching the other kids sing. He studies very hard in school and has nearly caught up with the rest of the kids in spite of being 6 months behind. Jonathan is so happy to be here and he lets us know every day how grateful he is.

We'll start with Charlotte Derisima. She is about 29 years old. She has been here for many years. She isn't sure how old she was when she came here. She doesn't remember her family, except for a brother** that comes to visit on occasion and brings gifts for all of the children. Charlotte loves to read, especially thrillers. She loves movies about Jesus. She is quiet and shy until she gets to know you, and then watch out! She will talk your ears off! Charlotte says she doesn't like beer, and when she tasted my wine she said, "bleck" but she confessed to enjoying a little rhum now and then! Charlotte dreams of a big church wedding, with lots of dancing and music at the reception. We will say a prayer that Charlotte is able to meet a patient man that will take good care of her for she is truly special in every way!

**update - it turns out the "brother" is really a guy that lived at another mission she lived at before here. And apparently he hasn't been around for several years. lolz!
